Reports from India politics news suggest that most voters in West Bengal are not just relieved at the way the central security forces are managing law and order in the state this time but they are also overjoyed. This has not just allowed them to vote freely but also fearlessly because they lived their entire lives seeing intimidation, violence and killings during elections.

This time though, it is a totally different ballgame because the Election Commission (EC) has ensured heavy deployment of central paramilitary forces in the state to prevent the violence, intimidation and bloodletting.

For the people of Bengal such intimidation and violence by the ruling parties like Left Front earlier and now Trinamool Congerss (TMC) is a way of life. Most of them don’t even know that elections can be held in a peaceful manner without violence and loss of lives.

It was the communist rule of almost four decades that is responsible for the kind of violence, intimidation and bloodletting that takes place in the state during elections. The communists are the worst abusers of democratic systems everywhere across democratic world.

According to recent political news, after the defeat of the communist-led Left Front in Bengal in 2011, the thug and hooligan gangs of the communists, locally known as the “Harmanda Brigade” shifted their allegiance to the TMC.

No difference between the TMC and communists

The TMC came to power on the back of a very powerful attractive and ethical slogan, in the local language — Ma, Mati, Manush or Mother, Earth and Humankind.

It enjoyed the unconditional support of the entire Bengali population especially women who looked up to Mamata Banerjee as a courageous woman leading the TMC from the front.

Going by India politics news of that time, the people were sick and tired of communist misrule and TMC came up as the perfect alternative that upheld Bengali Hindu values or so it seemed.

Today, the TMC under Banerjee is looked at with the same annoyance and antagonism just as the communists were looked at in 2011, while the BJP is looked upon as the new saviour.

One can argue that people in Bengal could be suspicious of the BJP as well and they could very well worry that the BJP will also go the TMC way. Thankfully, they know that the BJP has a great track record of performance and living up to its promises.

BJP had learnt its lessons well in 2021 state assembly elections

The 2021 state assembly elections in Bengal was actually one of the worst defeats that the BJP had suffered in its entire history. As the ruling party at the centre, with direct control over the central paramilitary forces, the BJP managed to snatch this defeat from the jaws of victory.

The BJP had failed to figure out the different levels and variants of election rigging and manipulation that takes place in Bengal according to India politics news reports of that period.

The party organization in the state was too weak and was in no shape to operate in Bengal like how the TMC does today and the communists did earlier — use of hooligan muscle power to dominate the streets.

Consequently, after the TMC cheated its way to victory in the assembly elections, it was the BJP supporters, voters and party members that paid a terrible price as the TMC thugs and hooligans went berserk on them after the final results. This time, the EC is leaving nothing to chance and has taken every security precaution to prevent the use of intimidation, violence and killings during elections to prevent BJP supporters from leaving their homes. Today, most poll predictions suggest the BJP is going to get more seats in Bengal than it did in 2019.
