Rajnath Singh's Strategic Outlook: POK's Inevitable Alignment with India

The Indian defence minister recently observed that the people in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) would be happy to join India as they would be attracted by the level of progress and development taking place in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) going by Hindi ki news and other media reports. It is indeed a matter of pride for every Indian when the country’s defence minister makes a statement like that because among other things it also indicates the power of country. However, it is easier said than done and the defence minister surely knows that.

Pakistan may be in a deep economic crisis today but it has still managed to sustain its oversized military and it has nuclear weapons, which is in the hands of its irresponsible leadership.

The last time Pakistan lost a part of its territory was in 1971 when it lost what was known as East Pakistan then. Prior to the partition of India in 1947 that part of the Indian subcontinent was East Bengal.

When the people of East Pakistan raised the banner of revolt against the barbaric savagery of West Pakistani repression, it resulted in the genocide of over three million people in East Pakistan, over 80% of who were Hindus.

Re-integration of PoK with India must have a stronger and deeper basis

The defence minister’s statement about PoK reintegrating with India for better economic benefits may be good for breaking top 10 News today headlines but it is otherwise contradictory.

By that logic, China has built up a much better economy in Tibet than India has done in Arunachal Pradesh so far. Does that mean, the people of Arunachal Pradesh will accept Chinese claim over their state because of the possibility of better economic development?

The answer is a big no because the people of Arunachal Pradesh have rejected China’s claims as absurd and stupid even in the past during Congress rule when even basic infrastructure was not built by the government.

Today, with the BJP in power both in the state as well as at the centre, it is a different story altogether in Arunachal Pradesh as per Hindi ki news. The state is already witnessing path-breaking infrastructure milestones being completed at great speed.

The point to be noted here is that integration of a particular region with country A or B in its neighbourhood depends on its cultural, emotional and historic relations with country A or B.

PoK has traditionally and historically been a part of India

The defence minister’s statement is not wrong because the mass protests in PoK have shown the local people there to be in favour of integration with India.

However, this is not as simple as it was in Germany because the entire population of PoK is Muslim and their only motivation to integrate with India is to get economic benefits according to Hindi ki news.

If they do not connect emotionally, culturally and historically with Indian nationhood, their integration with India could become a serious problem in future.

India is a civilization nation with the oldest history of human civilization in world and every Indian patriot rightfully takes pride in such an impressive history.

If people of the reintegrated areas of PoK do not connect to this civilization heritage of India or they are not interested in the pre-Islamic past of PoK then such a reintegration would be a liability for India. In that case, India should wait for the appropriate time when PoK could be forcefully reintegrated with India by military means. Then, the people of PoK would have no option to agree or disagree with the process of reintegration. They will have to accept the power of the Indian state and accept Indian citizenship under the same laws that apply to every other Indian across the country.
